In A Pickle is a family inspired catering company designed to take your event to the next level. Our team is passionate about food and strives to create delicious menus to entice and nourish by using only the freshest, highest quality produce available.

Linked to our catering division is our Martha Street outlet where you can grab tasty morsels through to take home dinners created to make your life easier by providing  you with wholesome homemade options made on site.

Directors Tim and Esther Downie are committed to providing exceptional service and food to create a total package of excellence for their clients.

From intimate dinners for two through to charity events for 500, out attention to detail is of the utmost importance. In A Pickle has an amazing team of hospitality professionals that create the food in the Martha Street outlet, transport the food and then serve the food at your event. This ensures a product knowledge that is second to none. Our team is passionate about food and prides itself on creating memorable experiences for our clients.

Our aim is to nurture the body, heart and soul of our clients by offering passionate handmade food and a totally fulfilling event experience through consistent service and innovative product, using fresh local produce.

1973

Born in cosmopolitan Melbourne, Victoria.

1977

Enjoyed trawling Victoria Markets with her Mum and Dad on the search for hot jam filled donuts on Sunday mornings. Also known to frequent iconic Pelligrini’s for their delicious minestrone when the mood grabbed.

1981

Dragged up to sunny Surfers Paradise for an early sea change.

1987

Early hospitality career begins at McDonalds Coolangatta where the eye candy competed with the view of panel vans parked along the esplanade.

1990

Graduates from high school and commences a Biomedical Science Degree with a view to a career in medicine – bad choice of degree but brings her to Brisbane.

1992

Takes over her mother’s café in Cleveland and the love affair with food service begins.

1996

Her beloved mother, responsible for much inspiration, passes away and she heads overseas to eat her way around the world.

1998

Returns and meets her long suffering soul mate Tim.  Sitting around one night they brainstorm business idea of selling jams and pickles and come up with “In A Pickle”.  Tim registers business name but business idea is shelved.

1999

Settles in suburbia after buying house on same day as due to give birth to 1st child.  1st child Alice arrives and not content to play Mummy she starts catering business from home.  Should mention here business started with no menus – these are hastily prepared upon receiving first enquiry.  Empire begins.

2003

Finds permanent site in Camp Hill after business outgrows home from awesome word of mouth PR.  Doomsayers suggest opening shop too risky but she puts the house on the line anyway.

2004

Tim joins business after realizing if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em.

2005

2nd child Harriet born and then in 2006 3rd child Max arrives and then in 2009 they decide to try for no 4 – arrival imminent.  Decided that large family will ensure sufficient staffing levels over next 20 years!!
